Audi TT Clutch and Flywheel Replacement: Restoring Smooth Gear Shifts

Audi TT Clutch and Flywheel Replacement: Restoring Smooth Gear Shifts
Posted:
A big job for Jon - one of our vehicle technicians. An Audi TT came in, with gear changes that were a struggle, and had become clunky.

When the Audi came in to us, the vehicle was still operational, but had an ongoing issue with difficult gear selection. This issue had been present since the car was purchased, and gradually worsened over time. After a thorough inspection and removal of the gearbox and clutch by Jon, we discovered that the clutch pressure plate had broken into three pieces.

The clutch is a crucial component in the transmission system: Its primary function is to disengage the engine from the gearbox when changing gears. Without a functioning clutch, the engine would maintain continuous drive through the gearbox, making gear selection difficult. Moreover, this continual rotation of the gears during shifts can lead to internal gearbox failure.

On this vehicle, the flywheel will also be replaced due to excessive heat and wear. The Audi TT is equipped with a dual mass flywheel, which is designed to absorb significant engine torque and reduce vibration. Over time, the dampers inside the flywheel can wear, which can result in excessive vibration and chattering.

To resolve these issues, we will replace the damaged components with a new three-piece clutch kit and a flywheel. This will ensure that the customer’s Audi TT now operates with smooth gear shifts and without the risk of further gearbox damage.

This vehicle issue highlights the importance of addressing gear selection problems promptly. Ignoring these issues can lead to more severe damage, and costly repairs. Regular vehicle maintenance is key to ensuring the longevity and reliability of your vehicle.
